Koguryo

コグリョ

Required for 6th kyu green belt

Koguryo (also spelled Goguryeo) is the name of one of the kingdoms from the Three Kingdoms Period [1st cent. BC - 668 AD] of Korea. The kindom of Koguryo was the largest, oldest, and most powerful of the three kingdoms. According to Korean and Chinese records, Koguryo first appears in 75 BC as the name of a Chinese district. Koguryo became an independant kingdom in 37 BC. The other two kindoms, Silla and Paekche (or Baekje), were established in 57 BC and 53 BC, respectively. The Three Kindgdoms Period ended when Silla, the smallest of the three kinddoms, conquered Paekche in 660 AD, and Koguryo in 668 AD, unifying all of Korea.

This kata is the fourth taught in the American Butokukan system, and its purpose is primarily to teach rotational power generation combined with upper/lower body coordination and control. Additionally, this kata presents a significant increase in technical difficulty and demand upon a student's cardiovascular conditioning. Given that students testing for green belt are typically required to perform all of their kata in order, and repeatedly, Koguryo represents a challenge that some students may need to prepare for with some out of class conditioning training.
